Advertise on Amazon—Sell products through your Website with Amazon
For most companies, taking their business to the next level involves selling products or services online. And in today's wretched economy and competitive environment, advertising is critical to increasing leads. But in most cases, advertising can be too expensive. Google Adsense, for example, is just out of reach for the typical small business. The pricing for Amazon's Product Ads, however, is actually quite reasonable. Just by signing up as an advertiser, you get $75 in free clicks.
Product Ads is a "pay as you sell" service. This post-pay service. This means that a balance will increase in your account as your ads accumulate clicks. After an initial charge of $1.00, we extend you a measured amount of credit in accordance with a payment ladder with credit levels between $50 and $500.
Amazon even offers templates that you can use to create your ads. You can create a new product file, from our Product Ads file template, or modify an existing product file. A product file can be uploaded to Seller Central manually or, for frequent updates or files of size larger than 10 MB, via FTP.
Where will your ads display?
Your ads will display in numerous relevant categories:
- Health and Beauty
- Home Improvement
- Musical Instruments
- Pet Supplies
Selling your products on Amazon

A study by comScore, found that Amazon tops the list of most visited retail and auctions sites world-wide.
Website sales and Amazon selling—a winning combination
By listing products on Amazon, many Internet entrepreneurs have found that their website sales have doubled over night. And by listing products for sale on Amazon, one would expect their sales on their own website to diminish. Some website owners expected Amazon sales to split their market and cut into their own websites's business but interestingly, the volume of sales from Internet websites, in most cases, do not go down after launching an Amazon sales place. In fact, by adding Amazon to a marketplace where consumers can purchase your products, many retailers have seen their business double.
You can choose either or both. But most online retailers have found that by selling both through their own website and also through Amazon's marketplace, they have doubled their business.

Don't forget to remember shipping costs, and if you are like most Amzaon sellers, you package your items yourself so that cost is not important.
Processing an order
After you have established your inventory on Amazon, you will need to pull it from your inventory and print the shipping label. Click "Buy Shipping", enter your information such as package weight and dimensions. Choose your shipping options. Add a "delivery confirmation" for .20 because it is worth it to know that the customer received your product. Click "hide postage" because if your customer paid $3.99 for postage and you, the seller, only paid $2.53 your buyer could get mad. Double check fields that you have entered, and click "Buy shipping service". Download the .pdf file and stick it to the package.
Packaging your product
The U.S. Postal Service will send you DVD boxes for free, then just wrap them in paper. Get brown paper bags that you can obtain from the grocery store for free. It is perfect for selling DVDs and books on Amazon.
So, you got a cancellation from a person and they sent their purchased item back. Time to issue a refund, but first ask yourself, can you charge a re-stocking fee? Amazon specifically states that you can charge up to 20% and in some cases 50% of the items cost as a restocking fee (source). This is probably helpful if you sell something like a CD or DVD that has been opened as "new" and now you can no longer sell the item for the same price. If the situation is different and you can sell the product to another consumer for the same price, then you can skip the re-stocking fee. It's better to have a customer happy with your brand than make a few extra bucks.
How to increase sales on Amazon
The simple answer is
- List more items for sale
- Reprice your items
Saving a business during a wicked recession
After 2000, the dot-com collapse resulted in many people getting laid off from their 9-5 jobs, and unable to find another one. Survival of the fittest is certainly relevant in this scenario. Those that started a business simultaneously while searching for another job, soon gave up on the job hunt and focused their attention on selling their products online. These people had found their own American dream-- online.
Many online retailers sell their products through their own website and have found success. But as the recession remains, small business owners are looking for ways to increase revenue. After Amazon branched out and started different products in their line, some online retailers decided it was time to give Amazon a try.
Sounds simple enough, but the fact is…. it works.
