Search Engine Optimization - A Short Starting Point
During a recent interview, Green Host It’s CEO put it this way:
"A few days ago, I was asked by a friend to explain the process of search engine optimization and marketing one's website. To answer this question in a simple email, is not to give it justice, so I will attempt to write a short and concise summary of the steps that I feel are necessary to get started.
I started studying search engine optimization in 1997 when I launched my first web hosting company, and have not stopped studying, attending conferences, reading and breathing search engine optimization since. It has a steep learning curve and is constantly changing, but search engine optimization is such a fascinating area. It can make or break a business. Without organic leads from Google or Bing, a company can spend thousands of dollars on email marketing and pay-per-click advertising.
The most tried and true method of lead generation, in my opinion, is search engine optimization."
Here are some basic steps to consider when getting started marketing your website:
- I use Joomla Open Source web design tool to create websites. The reasons are numerous and are explained in detail on our create your website page. For SEO marketing on a Joomla website, I recommend installing ijoomlaseo - this is the program that will generate Title, Description, and Keywords (meta tags) for each page.
- I install xml-sitemaps.com on all my websites. This program is inexpensive and will generate a sitemaps.xml file for your site (the file that tells Google what pages you have and invites Google's bot to crawl them).
- I recommend webmasters setup a Google Webmaster Account - this is where you will tell Google about your site as well as list the sitemap filename.
- Once these steps are completed, I recommend installing Google Analytics on your site so that you can track your visitors and see where they are coming from, what is the most popular page on your site and what is the most popular exit page on your site:
- I just purchased a new copy of webceo.com for myself and I am using it to compare my site against my top competitors and webceo will give me analytics and tips that I can use to maximize the chances of my site being listed near the top of Google's search results. A good starting point here is to generate a list of keywords as well as a list of your competitor sites.
- If you are a large corporation with a sizable budget and are looking for a consulting firm that is skilled in teaching search engine optimization or managing your SEO, I recommend bruceclay.com I have attended several of Bruce's conferences in Simi Valley and am awestruck by his depth of knowledge on the subject.
"The process of promoting a site is not something that can be done overnight, but I am excited about the process because the benefits are so tremendous for a small business owner. Please keep in mind, these steps are only the beginning of promoting your website. It is an ever changing area and we at Green Host It will continue to publish information here or at our blog that we find helpful to webmasters looking to grow their business on the Internet."
