Giving in harmony with Nature
For starters, the range of charitable activities is enormously wide. To be a charity, an organization must have charitable purposes and must operate for the public benefit. Green charities serve the environment and support environmentally friendly actions.
The people of the United States are very generous. Consequently, over ninety percent of American households give to charities and the average annual household contribution is nearly three thousand dollars!
Green charities: How the money is spent
The majority of charitable dollars goes toward environmental causes, education, human services and grant-making foundations.
Everyone has their favorite green charities. Here are ours:
Our favorite charities are super cool. We like the World Wildlife Foundation and St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
World Wildlife Foundation
The mission of WWF is to conserve nature and reduce the most pressing threats to the diversity of live on Earth. Therefore, WWF has been doing just that for over 50 years!
WWF is a voice for creatures who have no voice. The World Wildlife Foundation seeks to protect and restore species and their habitat that they depend on. The WWF mobilizes millions of people to support conservation. WWF is a nonprofit organization that values the trust that has been placed in them. Their commitment to the environment exists at all levels. We like that the WWF also considers humanity in their mission and serves to seek compromise so that people and nature thrive and live in harmony with one another.
St Jude Children’s Research Hospital
Although this organization is not really “green”, I do have a special place in my heart for St Jude. The mission of St Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures and means of prevention for pediatric catastrophic diseases. Founder, Danny Thomas, had the vision to create a hospital in which no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family’s ability to pay. St Jude’s goal is to be the leader in advancing treatment and prevention of catastrophic diseases in children.
Green charities: How can we help?
If you can’t give back, then its not as gratifying. Consequently, one of the pluses of being an entrepreneur is that you get to choose which charities your organization gives back to. We like WWF and St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and Green Host It has given back to these organizations. We donate to St Jude and periodically to WWF. Therefore, while we would like to do more for these two organizations, we are looking for other ways to give back.
