The Philosophy of Living Green
Chances are, if you’re like most people, you want to live a better life, have more income, spend less, and be happier. The problem is, people worldwide are struggling with a sluggish economy, high unemployment, and various forms of financial problems so much so that many families hardly even notice that the economy IS improving.
What does it mean to go green?
The term go green means to change your habits so they are more environmentally friendly, but it can be more than that…. much more. We have become an economy of disposable goods, income, and property. It is no wonder there is a popular movement to be green minded. If we lived as the greatest generation had lived, with the same ethics and morality, we wouldn’t need to think green, we would BE green.

For those with parents that grew up in the depression, you most likely know the effect that the depression had on people’s core philosophy to cherish every thing they have. The question is, do we cherish what we have? Or have we all forgotten our history and evolved into a nation of spoiled brats? Most likely, the answer is no. Many people who remember the depression or know someone that lived through it, know that you should buy the very best when you can afford it, maintain it, so that you don’t have to replace it. And beyond that, the philosophy of being green means to live better and more conscious of our actions and the effects those actions have on the environment. Living green is very much about being conscious of one’s actions.
What is the philosophy of living green?
- Live with less – frugality is green.
- Buy less often – Keep items in good order, then use them for decades. Living green is making a come back.
- Credit is not green – Be a conscientious consumer, buy less and only when you have the money. Living frugally is living green.
- Buy highly renewable products when available. Build with Cedar, or Bamboo instead of Redwood or IPE (a teak hardwood from the Brazilian rain forests) for your home or outdoor structures. Recycled plastics are not green building items. Where will they go when they finally fail? Buy more products packaged in paper and glass to reduce plastics and the use of fossil fuels to make them.
Buy better, buy less, be green.
If every person were to cut out buying five non-essential items every month, there would be a significant reduction in items for landfills – as well as the energy to make, deliver, and store all these items.

It’s an interesting and fun way to meet new people, learn new environmentally-friendly strategies, and it provides opportunities to look at current trends and upcoming events. Ask people with whom you network with what they like and don’t like about each green trend: benefits, advantages, pros and cons, as well as anything else. When a pattern in their preferences develops, you’ll have useful information to use at the planning stage as you move your business toward green.
