What type of site do you have?
The different types of web sites and their purpose
We recently undertook a study to determine which types of sites soar like an eagle and which run head on into the brick wall of abject failure and, interestingly, the successful sites have a lot in common. Here is a list of the different types of sites that a business owner might consider launching in order to build a new business or brand.
1. News or blog site
Perhaps the most common of the types of sites thanks to the “out of the box” software technology on the Internet today. News or blog sites are easy to setup and take about as much time to setup as it does to eat a sandwich. Before you decide on your new site, carefully research the niche that you are considering. The niche that you choose can often be the decision that makes or breaks whether you are successful. This does not suggest that there are “incorrect” niches but the only person that is going to know best how you will market your new site is you. If you are not planning on putting a lot of work into your new site and you choose a super competitive niche, for example, you might be in for a disappointment. With all of the competition for attention on the world wide web, it is difficult to get anyone to notice your web site. So choose your niche carefully.
2. Content site
When talking about content web sites, the term “content site” describes a site that offers different types of content such as videos, songs and photos. And because there is a constant demand on the Internet for these types of sites, content sites are extremely popular. There is also very little work involved in putting up a content site because of the many design software applications available today. Unlike a text or blog site, you will not be typing up anything or hiring others to write articles, but instead you basically just have to link or integrate content into your site. With the ability to integrate videos and photos into your pages, you can click a few times on your mouse, maybe type in a fixed width and height and boom – instant content for your web site.
There are plenty of ways for you to monetize these two types of web sites. The best place to start is to look at some different types of media content. Then, brainstorm a site you could make and where you would go to get the content.
3. Community site
Community based web sites consist of forums or message boards. An example of this type of site is a social network styled sites that attempt to get its visitors involved or engaged and then become frequent visitors who return. When developing a community site, pay attention to the particular niche. The odds of getting people to join and stay at your community web site are a lot higher if the niche community you have for them is not abundantly available on the Internet. It is important to do some research to be sure that the niche you are choosing is one that is in high demand, yet not in plenty. The message board admin system, VBulletin, is perfect if you want to start a forum‐based community. All you need to get started is a domain name, web hosting and an idea for what type of niche you want to target. Then you’re ready to go!
4. eCommerce site
An eCommerce site is a site that offers products or services for sale over the Internet. However, the term may refer to more than just buying and selling products online. It also includes the entire online process of developing, marketing, selling, delivering, servicing and paying for products and services.
5. Brochure site
A brochure site is a very basic web site most often used by companies and organizations to display an attractive online presence while providing company and product information. It is referred to as brochure web site because, essentially, it is the same type of general information found in a traditional company brochure.
6. Service site
Service oriented web sites are sites that help visitors with a specific service. An example of this type of site is one that offers a download of a software application. As the site owner, you can charge for this online service if it were a quality service.
With close to 130 million web sites on line at the moment and every day, 6,000 new web sites launch creating entrepreneurs by the thousands. You have the opportunity to develop just about any type of web site to fulfill just about any type of need. The more things you can try and test, the greater your chances of achieving Internet marketing success and ultimately, your end goal of finally earning a living from home.
